Morelli Named Women's Golf Coach

STEUBENVILLE – Director of Athletics, Mike Holmes, has announced the hiring of Mitch Morelli to lead the newly establish Franciscan University women's golf team.

Morelli, a Steubenville native, and Catholic Central graduate will be the first coach in program history for the women's golf team.

"I am very excited about starting a new program," remarked Morelli. "I have the chance to put my mark on this program and I am looking forward to getting it started. Steubenville is my hometown and a chance to be a head coach at a school in my backyard is a dream come true."

"I feel really great about bringing Mitch on board," commented Holmes. "Mitch has a good blend of collegiate coaching experience, contacts in the area, and golf acumen to springboard the program from the beginning. He helps us skip some of the early pitfalls that a new program may have."

Morelli comes to Franciscan after graduating from Robert Morris in May of 2016. Morelli earned his degree is management and finance. While at RMU, Morelli served as a student assistant coach for the Colonials women's basketball team. He had a hand in communicating and recruiting players from over 20 countries as well as helping to organize and promote all of Coach Sal Buscaglia's summer camps. Morelli organized and assisted with in-season practice and off-season workouts and assisted in coaches' meetings and various other tasks as directed by Coach Buscaglia.

Prior to RMU, Morelli played golf for four years at Catholic Central and helped the Crusaders to an OVAC team win his freshman and senior seasons.

"I am very excited to start talking to recruits and establish a good, competitive Catholic culture," commented Morelli. "We are going to start this program off on the right foot."

Morelli will officially begin his duties as head women's golf coach on October 15. He will spend this academic year recruiting and scheduling and the Lady Baron golf team will officially begin competing in the fall of 2019. He can be reached by email ( or by phone (740-381-3453).
