ORCHARD PARK, NY - In the annual preseason coaches poll of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference coaches, the Franciscan men's basketball team was picked to finish eighth in the conference, as announced by the league Monday.
After tying for second place in the conference a season ago, La Roche College and Penn St. Behrend pick up the top two spots in the 2017 AMCC Men's Basketball Preseason Poll. In a close race for the top, it was La Roche who edged out Behrend for preseason bragging rights. Medaille College was chosen by league coaches to finish third in a preseason poll that only saw three votes separating the top three teams.
Under second-year head coach Joe Wallace, the Barons look to build on their late-season success last year. The Barons return four and their five starters from last year while adding substantial depth to their bench with 10 new faces to the team.
Senior guard Keoni Sablan returns as the Barons' leading scorer with 13.8 points per game last year and is just 114 points away from 1,000 for his career. Sablan was ninth in the conference in scoring and averaged 2.2 assists per game. Sophomore center Matt Trent averaged 9.3 rebounds per game and finished the year with 121 rebounds after coming in midway through the year. Trent put up 13 blocks in …Recorded 13 blocks in 13 games and averaged 9.9 points per game.
The Barons officially open their season on Wednesday at Chatham at 8:00 pm but will square off against Youngstown State tomorrow at 7:35 pm. The game will be aired on ESPN3.
