ALTOONA, Pa. – The Franciscan men's basketball team dropped a 91-49 decision to AMCC opponent Penn St.-Altoona, Wednesday evening.
Led by junior Juwan Perkins with 11 points while senior Keoni Sablan added nine points and three assists. Sophomore Matt Trent posted a team-high five rebounds while adding a steal, a block, and two points.
Franciscan fell behind the Lions 12-0 in the first 5:26 of the first half. Franciscan cut the lead down to 14-6 with back-to-back threes from Perkins before senior JP Dombrowski hit a jumper with 9:17 to play to get the Barons to within six, 14-8. The Lions pushed their lead to 19-8 before a pair of free throws from senior Jacob Divens cut the deficit back to single digits, 19-10, but the Lions closed out the first half on a 16-4 run to take a 35-14 lead into halftime.
Following the break, the Lions used a 11-0 run over the first three and half minutes of the second half to give the hosts a 46-14 lead. Sophomore Joe Schriner hit a three to end the Lion run at the 16:16 mark but the Lions had an answer for every Baron basketball and kept Franciscan at bay. Franciscan's freshman Joe Vernau made a layup at the 1:26 mark to close out the Baron scoring while the Lions used a 5-0 run over the final minutes to seal the 91-49 win.
The Barons shot 31.8% (21-for-66) from the field and went 3-for-4 from the foul line. The Barons hit four three-pointers in the contest.
Franciscan returns home on Saturday as the Barons host Pitt.-Bradford for a 2pm tipoff at Kuzma Court.
