STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan men's lacrosse team battled until the final horn sounded but could not overcome Saint Vincent as the Bearcats slipped past the Barons, 12-10, at Memorial Field.
Franciscan (3-6) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as sophomore captain Mike Rosaschi scored the game's first goal. Freshman Dan McCartney flipped a quick pass to Rosaschi who went high to low to score his only goal of the game and give FUS a 1-0 lead 1:21 into action. The Bearcats won the ensuing faceoff and after an Alex Mueser shot missed high, SVC maintained possession and Jeremy Kennedy tied the game with 12:52 to play. Sophomore Mark Hanlon was impressive at the "X" for the Barons and won the next two faceoffs and the Barons converted the possessions into two quick goals to give FUS a 3-1 lead with 12:24 to play.
Anthony Hogeback cut the Barons lead back to one goal with his first of the game with 6:52 to play before Mueser converted a Baron turnover into a goal to tie the score at 3-3 with less than five to play in the opening quarter. Senior goalie Peter Herrmann made a fantastic save with 1:11 to play in the first to keep the game tied before time expired.
Saint Vincent build its first lead of the game as Hunter Sharp and Mueser scored a pair of goals within 40 seconds of each other to give the Bearcats a 5-3 lead in the second. Brendon Masten pushed the SVC lead to 6-3 which the Bearcats held until the 5:22 mark. Junior Paul Modzelewski score his first of the game, a wide angle shot from the left of the cage to cut the lead back to two and pulled the Barons to within one after Rosaschi picked up the groundball off Hanlon's faceoff win. Modzelewski went straight to the cage and scored his second of the game.
Hunter Sharp pushed the Bearcat lead back to two goals with 1:54 to play after a Baron turnover gave the ball back to SVC.
Rosaschi and Sharp traded goals to open the third quarter as the Bearcats maintained a two-goal lead. Rosaschi's goal to open the third came as the Barons were a man-down for the first three minutes of the quarter. Sophomore Jonas McCaig cut it back to one but Masten answered a minute later to give Saint Vincent a 9-7 lead.
McCaig and Masten traded goals once again before Masten gave the Bearcats their largest lead of the second, 11-8, with 8:04 to play. McCaig scored his third of the game with 5:51 to play to get the Barons back to within two but Hogeback's tally pushed the lead back to three. Junior Leo Munday put the final touches on the scoring with his first of the game with 1:30 to play after McCartney picked up the loose ball off of McCaig's shot.
Neither team could maintain a clean possession for the final 1:30 of the game as the score came to its final at 12-10 in favor of Saint Vincent.
Hanlon was 18-for-25 on faceoffs for the Barons and FUS won the groundball battle, 47-38.
"The guys played really clean, good lacrosse today," complimented head coach Pete Rosaschi. "We had some really great looks and took good shots but sometimes it just doesn't end in your favor."
McCaig and Modzelewski finished the day with three goals each while McCaig added a pair of assists. Rosaschi scored a pair and handed out an assist for the Barons.
Herrmann finished the day with 11 saves in cage.
Franciscan returns to the field as the Barons travel to Alfred State on Saturday for a 2:00 pm faceoff.
