STEUBENVILLE – For the second-straight season, the Franciscan rugby team has defeated Robert Morris in the 3RRC Championship game to claim the league title and a spot in the NSCRO regional. This year, the Barons made a statement with a 42-5 win over the Colonials, Saturday afternoon.
Junior Matthew Hostutler got the Barons on top early as he scored a try in the first four minutes of action. The backs were able to run clean hands wide and Hostutler beat his man for the early try. Hostutler scored again about 10 minutes later on a similar play to increase the Baron lead.
"The team came out hungry today," remarked head coach Dan Kramer. "We knew exactly what we had to do. We talked about their composure during Thursday's training session and during the whole week. They have been calm and focused and knew what they needed to do and it was a matter of executing."
Later in the first half, senior James Weiss took a quick tap off of a penalty and beat a few defenders with shear strength to touch the ball down in goal.
Senior captain Paul Deschler was named Man of the Match following Saturday's contest. Deschler's composure was huge for the team down the stretch and he had some great line breaks as he scored twice.
"Our team played great today," continued Coach Kramer. "As always, we have work to do to improve. I was not happy with the number of penalties that we conceded and the fact that we received three yellow cards today. We plan to correct our mistakes and improve our game for regionals.
"We are playing some great rugby right now, but what gets me the most excited is the brotherhood we have been able to build this season," continued Coach Kramer. "Our players are becoming better men each and every day. They are growing together, they are sacrificing for each other, and they are learning from each other. I am proud to be a part of this group of men."
The Franciscan rugby team will continue its season in the NSCRO regional November 18-19, which Franciscan will host. Game times and opponents will be made available in the next few weeks along with previews of the upcoming regional.
