STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan athletic department and rugby team is hosting the 2017 NSCRO Central East Cup featuring the Barons, Taylor University and Robert Morris University, beginning on Saturday, November 18.
It is the first time in program history the Barons will host this Cup and marks back-to-back years that Franciscan has earned a spot in an NSCRO regional after winning the 3RRC championship two weeks ago with a 42-5 win over Robert Morris.
Robert Morris and Taylor University will square off in the first game of the weekend on Saturday in the semifinal matchup at 12:00 pm. Taylor comes into the weekend as the No. 2 seed while Robert Morris earned the third seed after finishing as the 3RRC runners-up. Taylor earned a spot in the regional after being crowned the Great Lakes CRC Champion.
Franciscan will face off against the winner of the Robert Morris/Taylor match on Sunday in the regional championship at 12 pm.
The Central East Cup winner will face off against the Central West Cup winner on April 7 for the Region Championship and earn a spot in the National Championship. Iowa Central won the Central West Cup championship with a 103-3 win over Xavier in the Central West Cup.
The meeting between Robert Morris and Taylor is the first time the two teams will face each other. If Franciscan faces Taylor in the championship game, it will be the first meeting between the two teams; a Franciscan/Robert Morris matchup will mark the 13th meeting between the two teams with Franciscan holding an 8-4 advantage in the program series.
The Central East Cup is set to get underway on Saturday at noon.
