STEUBENVILLE – In the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Games of the Week, Franciscan softball team took on Medaille in a battle of the top teams in the conference. The Lady Barons struggled in the first game and fell 8-1 before rebounding for an exciting 8-7 win in the nightcap.
With the bases loaded in the top of the first, the Mavericks looked to strike first once again in the second game. Freshman starter Jayln Effertz got Bridget Masiello to strike out swinging and end the inning.
The Lady Barons carried that momentum into the bottom half of the frame. The freshmen 1-2 hitters, Dennise Carrazco and Kathleen Thompson put two runners on with back-to-back singles. After a strikeout, freshman Ashley Kondracki reached on a one-out infield single, and thanks to a Maverick error, Carrazco came home to score. Medaille's starter, Laura Kratzke, got the last two Lady Barons to strike out and end the scoring threat.
Effertz worked a 1-2-3 second inning to keep the slim 1-0 lead for Franciscan. Junior Lindsey Finch led off the second with a double to left field and promptly stole second. Finch came home to score on the catcher's throwing error and gave Franciscan a 2-0 lead. Carrazco continued her hot day at the plate with a two-out single to left field. The Gilbert, AZ native then displayed her speed on the base paths as she stole second and third before coming home on another Maverick error. Thompson continued the two-out rally but the inning was ended with a groundout but not before the Lady Barons led 3-0.
The Mavericks erased the deficit in their next at-bat as Lauren Kocher sent the ball over the left field fence with two on to tie the game at 3-3. Effertz remained calm in the circle and got her final two outs.
In the continued back-and-forth affair, Franciscan plated three runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good, 6-3. Kondracki got hit by a pitch to lead off the frame before freshman Kayla Anderson drew a one-out walk to put two runners on. Finch then connected on a pitch for her first home run of the season and the Lady Baron lead.
Medaille got one back in the fourth before Franciscan added two more runs to its lead in the bottom of the inning to take an 8-4 lead. After a scoreless fifth inning for both teams, Medaille scored the game's final runs in the top of the sixth with a pair of two-out runs to trim the lead to one run, 8-7. Effertz got the final batter of the inning to pop up to second and end the inning.
The Mavericks threatened in the top of the seventh but Effertz ended the game with a strikeout to complete the split with Medaille.
