BETHANY, W. Va. – The Franciscan softball team struggled to get its offense going as the Lady Barons dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Bethany College. FUS lost the first game 5-1 before falling in the second 14-0 in five innings.
After the Bison scored first in the bottom of the first as Erica Amoroso stole home after advancing to third on a Lady Baron error. Senior pitcher Jordan Cunningham got Kayla Dinsmore to pop into a double play before Sarah Coss grounded out to end the inning.
Franciscan got its first hit in the top of the second but was held scoreless until the fifth inning. Trailing 5-0 after a four-run third for the Bison, the Lady Barons were able to get a run on the board in the fifth. Anna Fluharty and Cunningham strung together a pair of singles before being moved into scoring position thanks to a sac bunt from Anna King. Anne Pivarunas reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Kathleen Thompson fouled out to the left fielder, but it was deep enough for Fluharty to score and cut the lead to 5-1.
The Lady Barons were held scoreless in their final two at-bats, but Cunningham was able to keep the Bison off the board as well to wrap up the first game 5-1 in favor of Bethany.
Franciscan was held to just one run in the second game as Bethany posted four runs in the first one in the second and third, and eight in the fourth to take the 14-0 win.
The Lady Barons posted their only hit of the second game as Kathleen Thompson singled back to the pitcher with one out in the top of the fourth. Franciscan wasn't able to bring her home and the Bison led 8-0 after the top of the fourth.
The Bison plated eight runs in their final at-bat and Bethany was able to strand the final Lady Baron runner in the top of the fifth for the 14-0 win.
Thompson was 2-for-5 for the day for the Lady Barons.
Franciscan travels to Hilbert for an AMCC match up at 1:00 pm.
