ERIE, Pa. - The Franciscan softball team remained even in conference play to keep their post-season hopes alive with a split with the Hilbert Hawks. Their conference record now stands at 7-7.
Despite a solid pitching performance in game 1 by senior Jordan Cunningham, the Lady Barons dropped a hard fought 4-2 decision. Even with the loss, Cunningham lowered her ERA to 2.68 for seventh-best in the conference. "Jordan pitched a heck of a game for us today, unfortunately, we couldn't get our offense going," said Coach Walker.
The Barons were able to bounce back in game two behind another stellar pitching performance from freshman Jayln Effertz. Effertz scattered three hits and allowed one run while pitching a complete game and registering five strikeouts.
After a scoreless first, the Barons were able to plate 2 runs in the 2nd inning. freshman Ashley Kondracki led off the inning with a walk and advanced to 3rd on a single by freshman Kayla Anderson. Kondracki and Anderson then executed a perfect double steal to score the 1st run of the game. junior Lindsey Finch increased the Barons lead to 2-0 with a rbi single to score Anderson. Hilbert was able to score their lone run in the 5th to make the score 2-1. The Lady Barons added an insurance run in the 7th when (sr) Anne Pivarunas scored from 3rd on an infield single by (so) Anna King.
"Jayln pitched a really good game for us today and kept the Hilbert hitters off balance all afternoon," commented Walker.
He continued, "Anytime we get that kind of pitching and the defense makes plays we have a chance to be a pretty good team."
"Defensively I was really impressed with how Kay and Flu (Anna Fluharty) stepped up and started to become vocal leaders in the 2nd game."
The Lady Barons return home on Wednesday, April 26 to host Penn State Altoona in a 3 & 5pm doubleheader.
