STEUBENVILLE – Head softball coach James Walker has announced the incoming student-athletes who will make up the class of 2021 for the Lady Barons.
Joining the Lady Barons for the 2018 season are Maureen Cain, Victoria Clute, Amber Falletta, Ally Kuntz, Andi Queen, Allyson Weiss, Mallory Wood, and Jesse Zucker.
Cain, hailing from Rocky River, OH comes to Franciscan after a successful four-year career at Rocky River High School. While at Rocky River, Cain was a catcher and played third base and shortstop. She was a four-year varsity letter winner and four-year Great Lakes All-Conference selection. Cain was a 2017 Max Preps OH Player of the Week nominee.
Clute comes to Steubenville by way of Sublimity, OR after a four-year career at Regis High School. Clute was a four-time all-conference outfielder and was an All-State honorable mention. While at Regis, Clute attended Camp Joshua, a pro-life leadership camp and volunteered for five years at the vicariate-sponsored vacation bible school. Clute helped with the Christmas care package drive for the homeless of Portland.
Crossing the Ohio River from Aliquippa, PA, Falletta comes to Franciscan after a four-year career at Hopewell High School. Falletta split her time between third base and pitching and was a four-year starter at Hopewell. She was a two-time All-Section team selection and was named to the Beaver County top-20. Falletta was a Special Olympics volunteer and was a Feast for the Less Fortunate while at Hopewell.
Kuntz made the short trip from Toronto, OH to Franciscan after four years at Toronto High School. Kuntz was a catcher and played first base at Toronto while starting all four years. Kuntz was named to the Second Team All-District and All-OVAC team. While at Toronto, Kuntz was an Ohio HS Fastpitch Scholar Athlete. She spent time in high school volunteering with the Toronto Beautification Committee and Jewett Wildcat Community Center.
Also hailing from Ohio, Queen comes to Franciscan from Portsmouth, OH and was a pitcher for Portsmouth High School. Queen was named to the Ohio Valley all-conference first team and was a South East Ohio Athletic League Conference first team selection. Queen was an all-district honorable mention. Queen was the valedictorian at Portsmouth and won an OVC Academic Award and SEOAL academic award.
Weiss will don the Lady Baron uniform this spring after playing for Lumen Christi Catholic School in Greenwood, IN. Weiss was a catcher and played in the infield at Lumen Christi while also playing travel softball for McKand Irish. During high school, Weiss helped to tutor Burmese refugees through Catholic Charities of Indianapolis and worked with children on a Native American Reservation on a school pilgrimage to Phoenix, AZ.
Wood makes the trip up from Atlanta, GA to join the Franciscan softball team. Wood was a three-year starter between catching and in the infield at St. Pius X High School and was the 2016 St. Pius X Coaches Award winner. Wood spent time on missions to Mexico with Family Mission Company and Mustard Seed Jamaica.
Zucker, also from Rocky River, OH and Rocky River High School, will join her teammate, Cain at Franciscan. Zucker was a two-year letter winner at Rocky River and was a team captain. The first baseman/outfielder earned the Pirate Pride Award. Zucker spent six years volunteering at St. Malachi's Monday Night meals. She also served on a mission trip to Long Island, NY to rebuild homes affected by Hurricane Sandy. Zucker is a certified hospice volunteer.
After their best season in program history in 2017, the Lady Barons look to go back to the AMCC tournament and battle their first ever conference championship. Franciscan finished the year 12-20 with an 8-10 record in conference. FUS earned the No. 5 seed in the AMCC tournament following the season.
