HIRAM – The Franciscan women's basketball team suffered a tough 64-31 loss to Hiram to wrap up non-conference play, Saturday afternoon.
Franciscan came out of the gate and built a 4-0 lead in the first minute and a half of a jumper from senior Bernadette Roach and a layup from sophomore Raegan Stead, but the lead would be short lived as Hiram scored 11 unanswered points to take an 11-4 lead with 4:27 to play in the first. Freshman Kaitlyn Sonneberger ended the run with a layup at 3:36 but the Terriers closed out the first with a 6-0 to lead 17-6 at the first quarter break.
The Terriers continued to build on their lead in the second quarter as they seemed to have an answer for all of the Lady Barons shots. Stead hit the back end of a trip to the free throw line to cut the lead back to 13, 27-14, with 3:03 to play in the second. The Terriers closed out the half with a 6-0 run to take a 33-14 lead into halftime.
Hiram increased its lead to 47-14 in the first eight minutes of the third quarter. Senior Johanna Roach made a layup followed by a three from freshman Abby Baierl to end the Terriers' run but Hiram closed out the quarter with a layup and a free throw to lead 50-19 after the first three quarters.
Franciscan's offense stepped up in the fourth quarter and scored 12 points in the final 10 minutes but the Terrier defense held strong and did allow the Lady Barons to cut into the lead and Hiram held on for a 64-31 victory.
Baierl led the Lady Barons with 11 points and four assists while Bernadette Roach pulled down 10 rebounds.
The Lady Barons travel to La Roche on Wednesday for a 6pm AMCC tilt.
