BRADFORD, Pa. – The Franciscan women's basketball team outscored Pitt.-Bradford 21-12 in the final quarter but were unable to overcome the Panthers as the Lady Barons fell 76-51 to the hosts in an AMCC game, Saturday afternoon.
Senior Bernadette Roach kicked off the scoring in the final quarter as she knocked down the back end of a trip to the free throw line and freshmen Kaitlyn Sonneberger and Abby Baierl hit back-to-back shot, Baierl's from beyond the arc, to cut the Panther lead to 28, 64-36, with 7:55 to play. Anna Colebert sandwiched a pair of three's around a jumper form Bernadette Roach to push the lead back to 32, 70-38, with 7:01 left on the clock.
After 1;20 of no scoring from either side, sophomore Raegan Stead made a layup and Baierl capitalized on a Panther turnover with a three-pointer thanks to an assist from Stead to get the Lady Barons to within 27, 70-43, with 5:09 to play in regulation.
After a Panther layup, Stead and Baierl hit a pair of three's to get the Lady Barons to within 23, 72-49, but Lyric Collins and Casey Stronger sandwiched a pair of buckets around Baierl's final jumper of the game to bring the score to it's final, 76-51.
Baierl was 4-4 in the fourth quarter, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. For the game, Baierl was 5-for-9 from the floor and 4-for-7 in threes.
The Panthers out-scored the Lady Barons 29-7 in the first quarter and built a 48-23 lead at halftime that FUS was unable to overcome. UPB added to its lead with a 16-8 third quarter before the Lady Barons offensive show in the fourth.
Stead led the Lady Barons with 17 points behind a 7-for-16 night while Baierl was close behind with 16 points. Stead had six rebounds for the game while Bernadette and Johanna Roach each chipped in four. Bairel finished the day with five boards.
As a team, the Lady Barons were 16-for-43 from the floor and 6-for-18 from beyond the three-point line. Franciscan shot 13-for-23 from the free throw line.
The Lady Barons will take the week off as Franciscan is in the midst of finals and will host Hilbert on Saturday, December 17 for a 2pm game.
