STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan women's basketball team out-scored Hilbert 23-7 in the third quarter but it wasn't enough as the Hawks held on for a 62-51 win at Kuzma Court, Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 20 at the half, the Lady Barons opened the third quarter with an 8-2 run thanks to five points from sophomore Raegan Stead to cut the lead to 42-28. Freshman Abby Baierl made it an 11-point game with a jumper and a three with 3:33 to play in the quarter. After a Hilbert free throw, Stead hit a pair of free throws to make it a 10-point game and freshman Kaitlyn Sonneberger cut the lead back to single-digits for the first time since the first quarter, 45-37, with a layup at 1:50. After a pair of free throws from freshman Cianna Vaughan, Stead and junior Sarah Schriner went back-to-back with layups to get the Lady Barons to within two, 45-43, with 22 seconds left in the quarter. The Hawks pushed the lead back to four with a pair of free throws to enter the final quarter with a 47-43 lead.
The Hawks opened the fourth quarter with four-straight points but the Lady Barons answered with four of their own to keep the score close, 51-47 in favor of the Hawks. Hilbert pulled away with an 11-2 run to take a 62-49 lead with 23 seconds left in the contest. Senior Bernadette Roach scored the final basket of the game as she completed a layup off a pass from Schriner to bring the score to its final, 62-51.
The Hawks rushed out to a 15-0 lead in the first quarter and outscored the Lady Barons 19-6 in the opening 10 minutes. Franciscan cut the lead back to 11 points in the second quarter as Stead made a jumper 1:45 into action. The Hawks and Lady Barons traded a pair of baskets each as the Hawks led 25-14 with 7:08 to play. Senior Johanna Roach cut the lead back to single digits, 25-16, with a layup at 6:33. The Hawks closed out the first half with a 15-4 run to lead 40-20 at the break.
The 20-point deficit set up an impressive comeback from the Lady Barons that came up just short against the Hawks.
Stead led the Lady Barons with 19 points while Baierl chipped in 10. Johanna Roach pulled down eight rebounds while Baierl grabbed six and Stead with four.
The Lady Barons take a quick break for the Christmas holiday before returning to action on December 31 against Geneva at 2pm.
