Lady Barons Lose to D'Youville on the Road

BUFFALO, N.Y. – A strong fourth quarter wasn't enough for the Lady Barons as D'Youville held on for a 64-47 win over the Franciscan women's basketball team, Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 60-29 just under halfway through the fourth quarter, sophomore Raegan Stead converted a layup to kick off a 9-0 run for the Lady Barons that was capped off by junior Sarah Schriner's three pointer to cut the lead to 60-36 with 5:03 to play. The Spartans pushed the lead back to 27 thanks to a layup from Dirian Evans and a free throw from Ali Cochrane.

Sophomore Gaby DeJesus forced a turnover and stole the ball with 3:09 to play and turned it in to two points for the Lady Barons to kick start an 11-0 run. Schriner added six points during the run while DeJesus hit a three-pointer with 43 seconds left to cut the deficit back to 16, 63-47. Jordan Smith capped off the scoring though with a final free throw and DeJesus' last ditch three-pointer fell just short as the final buzzer sounded.

The Spartans built a steady lead in the first quarter as they took a 17-2 lead with 2:26 to play in the first. Freshman Abby Baierl at 1:02 after classmate Cianna Vaughan pulled down an offensive board. Cochrane closed out the first quarter with a three to give DYC a 20-5 lead after the first.

Stead and Magee traded buckets to open the second before Stead hit a three to pull the Lady Barons within 13, 23-10, but the Spartans scored five unanswered points to push the lead back to 18 and used a 9-2 run to extend the lead to 37-12 with 1:02 left in the half. Schriner made a layup for the final Lady Baron basket off the half but Magee hit a pair of free throws to end the half and give the Spartans a 39-14 lead going into the locker room.

The Spartans pushed their lead to as many as 32 in the third off a pair of free throws with 4:59 to play but a three from Baierl and a layup from Schriner cut the lead back to 27 with just over three minutes to play. Evans made a layup for the Spartans before Anna Ames hit a three and Kaitlyn Sonneberger made a layup as the Lady Barons trailed by 24, 51-27, with 1:09 to play in the third. Jean-Ann Korona made a three pointer with 55 seconds left to give the Spartans a 54-27 lead.

Franciscan out-scored D'Youville 20-10 in the final quarter but the deficit was too great to overcome for the Lady Barons.

Schriner led the Lady Barons with 15 points while Stead chipped in 11. Baierl finished the day with nine points and dished out four assists while Vaughan led the Lady Barons with five rebounds.

The Lady Barons don't have a midweek game this week as they return home next Saturday, January 14, to host Medaille at 2pm.
