ERIE, Pa. – Despite a strong third quarter, the Franciscan women's basketball team was unable to hand the Penn State Behrend Lions their second-straight loss as the hosts held on for a 66-48 win, Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 43-24 at half time, sophomore Gaby DeJesus opened the third quarter with a layup for the first basket of the period to cut the lead to 43-26. Freshman Kaitlyn Sonneberger hit a jumper for the Lady Barons but the Lions answered with a layup and jumper of their own to push the lead back to 19, 47-28.
DeJesus hit a three and junior Sarah Schriner made a layup to trim the lead to 14, 47-33, and a three from Abby Baierl made it an 11-point game with 3:57 to play in the third quarter. A couple of good free throws and a three from the Lions sandwiched around a DeJesus layup pushed Behrend's lead back to 14 but Baierl drained another three for the last bucket of the quarter to pull the Lady Barons to within 11, 52-41. Franciscan out-scored PSB 17-9 in the third.
The Lions came out in the fourth and used a 14-7 run in the final 10 minutes to capture a 66-48 win.
DeJesus and Baierl each hit 16 points for the Lady Barons while senior Bernadette Roach pulled down a team-best six rebounds.
Franciscan returns home on Wednesday when La Roche comes to Kuzma Court for a 6pm AMCC tip off.
