STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan women's basketball team paid farewell to its two graduating seniors with a 49=38 win over D'Youville Saturday in the final home game of the season for the Lady Barons.
"I am extremely proud of our team effort, especially on defense and rebounding," exalted head coach Suzy Delaney. "That effort starts with our seniors, Johanna and Bernadette Roach. Both had great games and both hit clutch shots for us down the stretch. I am proud of them for their leadership."
After a tough second quarter, the Lady Barons went into the locker room trailing 25-15 to the Spartans. Junior Sarah Schriner and the Lady Barons came out of half on fire and quickly erased the 10-point deficit. Schriner opened the quarter with a layup and drew the foul to earn a trip to the line. After sinking the and-1, Schriner forced a turnover on the Spartans next possession to get the back to Franciscan. Schriner missed her layup but sophomore Gaby DeJesus was right there to collect the offensive rebound and put it back up for two and cut the lead to 25-20. Schriner went on to score Franciscan's next five points to tie the game at 25-25.
"We really challenged the girls at halftime and Sarah Schriner came out and put her foot on the gas pedal and got us going," complimented Coach Delaney.
The lead changed hands over the last six minutes of the quarter with the Lady Barons coming out ahead, 31-30, thanks to a pair of free throws from Schriner.
Bernadette Roach and freshman Abby Baierl hit back-to-back jumpers for the Lady Barons to open the fourth quarter to push their lead to five, 35-30. The Spartans would answer with a free throw and a jumper to cut the lead to 35-33 but Johanna Roach drained a deep three with 6:48 to play to push the lead back to five, 38-33. The Lady Barons did not let off the gas and pushed their lead to 12, 47-35, with just 33 seconds left thanks to a free throw from Schriner. D'Youville completed a three-point play with 27 to play but Schriner sealed the win with a pair of free throws on the Lady Barons' next possession to seal the 49-38 win.
Franciscan out-scored the Spartans 11-4 in the first quarter but D'Youville seemed to take control of the game with a 21-4 second quarter to build its 10-point lead at halftime.
Schriner and Baierl led all players with 16 points each while Baierl pulled down nine rounds, five off of the offensive glass. Bernadette Roach finished the day with 10 rebounds and a block. DeJesus chipped in six points and seven boards.
"I am really proud of how Abby played today. She answered the call of having our guards be more active rebounders," continued Coach Delaney. "Today was a great defensive performance; We needed it because we weren't very efficient on offense."
The Lady Barons hit the road for their final two games of the year as they head to Mt. Aloysius on Wednesday for a 6pm contest before finishing out the year at Medaille on Saturday.
