PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Franciscan women's basketball team opened the 2017-18 season at Chatham on Wednesday evening. The Lady Barons fell to the Cougars, 56-23.
The Lady Barons (0-1) were led by sophomore Cianna Vaughan with eight points behind a 4-for-5 day from the floor while pulling down a career-high 10 rebounds. Freshman Liz Galaburri finished the day with eight boards while classmate Rebekah Nevarez pulled down seven.
After a scoreless first 5:23 of play for both teams, freshman Annie McGraw got the Lady Barons on the board first with a jumper thanks to a pass from Vaughan. The Cougars (1-0) scored the game's next eight points to take an 8-2 lead and control of the first quarter. Franciscan battled back to get to within three, 10-7, with just 20 seconds left in the quarter, but that would be as close as the Lady Barons would get.
Chatham out-scored the Lady Barons 34-13 over the next two quarters to take a 44-20 lead with 10 minutes to play. The Cougars held a 12-3 advantage in the final quarter to walk away with the 56-23 win in the first game of the season for both teams.
The Lady Barons shot 34.9% from the floor (9-44) and was 4-for-8 from the foul line. Franciscan out-rebounded the Cougars 44-39.
Franciscan returns home on Saturday as the Lady Barons host Geneva in their home opener at 2:00 pm.
