ERIE, Pa. – Penn State Behrend out-lasted the Franciscan women's basketball team as the Lady Barons fell to the Lions, 51-36, in AMCC action Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Barons were led by freshman Rebekah Nevarez with 14 points behind a 5-for-7 day from the floor, including four Franciscan's five three-pointers, while sophomore Kaitlyn Sonneberger pulled down eight rebounds and freshman Laura Salzmann chipped in seven points and eight boards.
Franciscan finished the day 15-for-39 from the floor (38.5%) and held the Lions to a 22.1% shooting day (17-77).
The Lady Barons opened the game with a 10-4 advantage in the first quarter but Penn State Behrend answered with a 16-9 second quarter to take a slight 20-19 lead at halftime. The Lions hit a pair of free throws to open the third but Salzmann made a layup with 8:54 to play to keep the Lady Barons within one, 22-21. Behrend used an 8-0 run over the next five minutes to open up a 30-21 lead over Franciscan. Sophomore Rose Judge halted the run with a put-back layup after pulling down an offensive board, but Behrend answered with a 7-4 run over the final three minutes to close out the third with a 37-28 lead.
Penn State Behrend out-scored the Lady Barons 14-8 in the final 10 minutes to seal the 51-36 win for the Lions, handing them their first conference win of the season.
Franciscan looks to pick up its first win in the AMCC this year as the Lady Barons head to Penn State Altoona for an 8:00 pm tipoff on Wednesday.
