Fourth Quarter Comeback Falls Just Short at Bethany

BETHANY, W. Va. – The Franciscan women's basketball team mounted a fourth-quarter comeback that fell just short in the Lady Barons' 51-39 loss to Bethany, Friday afternoon.

Trailing 39-22 to start the fourth quarter, freshman Rebekah Nevarez opened the period with a layup off a pass from junior Gaby DeJesus. The Bison went on a 5-0 run over the next three minutes before junior Raegan Stead nailed a three-pointer to end the Bison run. With 5:18 to play, Kelsea Daugherty pushed the Bison lead back to 19 with a layup. Franciscan used a 10-run over the next three minutes, punctuated with a jumper from Cianna Vaughan to cut the deficit to single-digits, 46-37. Bethany answered with a three just 20 seconds later and sophomore Abby Baierl capped the Lady Baron scoring with a jumper with 1:13 to play to keep the Lady Barons' within 10, but Taylor Large sealed the 51-39 win with a layup with 1:02 to play.

Franciscan opened the game with a defensive battle in the first, outscoring the Bison 7-5 in the first 10 minutes but Bethany answered with a 14-3 second quarter to take a 19-10 lead into halftime.

The two teams traded layups to open the third before Bethany went on a 6-0 run to take a 27-12 lead with seven minutes to play. DeJesus then sandwiched a layup and pair of free throws around a three-pointer from Allison Kuhn with 5:15 to play. After a 6-1 run for Bethany, DeJesus made a three-pointer with 2:44 to play in the quarter before Haylie Glass made a jumper with just a second left on the clock to give the Bison a 39-22 lead after three quarters and set up the Lady Barons fourth-quarter comeback attempt.

DeJesus led the Lady Barons with 10 points while Stead added seven points and Bairel chipped in five points and five rebounds in her first game this season. Sophomore Kaitlyn Sonneberger led Franciscan with six rebounds.

The Lady Barons get back to AMCC action on Wednesday when they host Pitt.-Greensburg at 8pm.
