Lady Barons Drop Heartbreaker to Pitt.-Greensburg

STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan women's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 51-50 loss to Pitt.-Greensburg in the final seconds of Wednesday night's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference contest.

Trailing 50-48 with just 19 seconds left in regulation, sophomore Kaitlyn Sonneberger drew a foul as she was going up for a layup and went to the line. Sonneberger sank both free throws to tie the game at 50. Greensburg called a timeout to set up the last possession play. As Nadege Durand was driving, sophomore Cianna Vaughan was called for a tough foul under the basket and sent Durand to the line with 2.8 seconds left on the clock. Durand missed her first free throw but gave the Bobcats the lead with her second, 51-50. The Lady Barons gave all they had on the in bound by couldn't get a play off as the final horn sounded handing the Bobcats the win.

Franciscan led 46-41 with just under four minutes to play thanks to a Vaughan free throw but the Bobcats hung around and scored three-straight points to get within two with 2:13 to play. Sophomore Abby Baierl knocked down a free throw of her own but Durand made a layup on the Bobcats' ensuing possession to get Greensburg to within one. A layup from Colleen Murphy gave UPG its first lead of the second half, 48-47, before her free throw pushed the lead to two. Bairel made a free throw after getting a steal with 29 seconds left but Greensburg hand the better end of the free throw battle to close out the game.

Franciscan and the Bobcats played to a 10-10 tie in the first quarter before the Lady Barons exploded for a 16-6 second quarter to take the 26-16 lead into halftime. Sonneberger made a jumper with 1:06 to play in the first half to give Franciscan it's double-digit lead.

After Greensburg opened the third with a 7-4 run, the Lady Barons took their largest lead of the game with four unanswered points to lead by 11, 34-23 with 4:21 to play in the third. Baierl and sophomore Rose Judge hit back-to-back jumpers for the Lady Barons to extend their lead. After the Bobcats and Rebekah Nevarez traded baskets, junior Gaby DeJesus answer UPG's three-pointer with a deep three of her own to maintain the seven-point lead for Franciscan. The Bobcats went on a 6-2 run over the final 1:43 of the third to stay within seven, 41-34, after three quarters.

Greensburg out-scored the Lady Barons 17-9 in the final 10 minutes for the 51-50 win.

Sonneberg and Bairel paced the Lady Barons with 14 points each while Baierl posted her first double-double of the year with 10 rebounds. Vaughan finished with 10 boards and five points while adding three blocks.

Franciscan returns to the court on Saturday as the Lady Barons host D'Youville at 3pm.
