GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Franciscan women's basketball team suffered a loss to Pitt.-Greensburg, 53-39, Wednesday evening.
The Lady Barons came out strong in the first quarter and used a 10-2 run to take an early lead. Sophomore Abby Baierl kicked off the run with a jumper and a three-pointer before freshmen Rebekah Nevarez and Laura Salzmann made back-to-back jumpers with 5:57 to play. The Bobcats chipped away and eventually tied the game at 13-13 with 2:40 to play. The game remained tied until the 57-second mark when Greensburg took the lead 15-13, and never surrendered their advantage.
Greensburg out-scored the Lady Barons 11-4 in the second quarter to take a 28-17 lead into halftime.
Following the break, sophomore Kaitlyn Sonneberger opened the quarter with a pair of free throws to cut the lead back down to 28-19 just 10 seconds into action. The Lady Barons and Bobcats went shot for shot for the rest of the quarter as Greensburg held on to the 11 points lead after the third quarter, 38-27.
Junior Gaby De Jesus made a pair of free throws to open the fourth but the Bobcats used a 13-2 run over the next five minutes to push their lead to 20, 51-31, with 4:13 to play in regulation. Sonneberger halted the run with a jumper and Nevarez followed up with a three-pointer with 2:56 to play to cut the lead to 15, 51-36. Baierl nailed another three with 2:32 to play before the Bobcats scored the final two points of the game, both off free throws to seal the 53-39 win.
Baierl led the Lady Barons with 11 points and eight rebounds while junior Raegan Stead added nine points off the bench. Sonneberger finished the day with seven points and five rebounds. Baierl, Sonneberger and De Jesus each picked up three steals while Sonneberger and De Jesus each handed out a pair of assists.
The Lady Barons wrap up their final road trip of the season as they travel to D'Youville on Saturday for a 3:00 pm AMCC contest.
