Balanced scoring Leads Lady Barons to First Win

BUFFALO, NY – Three players finished in double digits for the Franciscan women's basketball team as the Lady Barons knocked off D'Youville 65-57 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action, Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Barons out-scored the Spartans 21-21 in the fourth quarter to turn a 45-44 deficit into the eight-point win. Sophomore Cianna Vaughan wasted little time in the fourth as she hit a jumper just 14 seconds into action to give the Lady Barons a 46-45 lead. Sydney Alton answered with a three-pointer and Darian Evans pushed the Spartan lead to 50-46 with a jumper before the Lady Barons went on a 14-2 run over the next seven minutes to extend their lead to 60-52 with 1:04 to play. Six different Lady Barons scored on the run including four from sophomore Abby Baierl and junior Raegan Stead.

The Spartans halted the Lady Baron run with a pair of free throws with less than a minute to play but junior Gaby De Jesus answered with a pair of free throws of her own to push the FUS lead back to eight, 62-54, with 48 seconds to play. Stead hit the front of a trip to the line before Vaughan scored the last two points for the Lady Barons with a pair of free throws of her own to give Franciscan a 65-54 lead with 25 seconds left. Monica June hit a three-pointer with 15 seconds left to bring the score to its final, 65-57, handing the Lady Barons their first win of the season.

Franciscan opened the contest on a 12-0 scoring run over the first seven minutes of the first half. Vaughan made back to back shots before sophomore Kaitlyn Sonneberger made a layup with 7:47 to play. Vaughan followed with a steal and layup at the 6:31 make to push the FUS lead to 8-0. Freshman Laura Salzmann and Stead hit back to back shots for the 12-0 lead. The Spartans closed out the quarter on a 9-6 run but Franciscan held the 18-9 lead after the first quarter.

The Lady Barons opened the second with a 5-0 run thanks to a three-pointer from De Jesus to give Franciscan a 23-9 lead. The Spartans used a 7-2 run to cut the lead back down to nine, 25-16 with 3:48 to play in the half. De Jesus hit another three to halt the run but the Spartans used four unanswered points to get to within eight, 28-20. Franciscan used a 6-3 run to close out the half and lead 34-23 at the break.

The Spartans used a 22-10 third quarter to take the lead 45-44 after three quarters and set up the 21-12 fourth quarter for the Lady Barons.

De Jesus and Stead led all scorers with 15 points each while Vaughan posted her first double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Baierl pulled down a team-best 11 rebounds and handing out five assists to go with her six points.

Franciscan shot 36.4% for the game while holding the Spartans to 32.8% shooting.

The Lady Barons return home on Wednesday when they host Mt. Aloysius for an 8:00 pm AMCC contest.
