Lady Barons Roll Past Thiel

STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan women's lacrosse team defeated visiting Thiel College for the first time in program history as the Lady Barons rolled to a 19-6 win, Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Barons opened the game with a 5-0 run over the first 4:43. Junior Mary Krolicki opened the scoring with her first goal of the game just 21 seconds into action before sophomores Carly McDonald and Elizabeth McEntee went back-to-back for a pair of goals. Krolicki then scored off an assist from McEntee and McEntee capped the scoring with her second of the game.

The Tomcats worked themselves back into the game with three-straight goals over the next nine minutes but Franciscan answered with its own three-goal run featuring a goal from McDonald, Krolicki and sophomore Elizabeth Dawyot.

Thiel scored its final goal of the half with 5:48 to play before sophomore Treise McCarthy celebrated her 20th birthday with her first goal of the game with 48 seconds before halftime. Krolicki closed out the half with her fourth tally of the game with 16 seconds left to give Franciscan a 10-4 lead.

Franciscan opened the second half with a 6-0 run to push the lead to 16-4 and starting a running clock for the Lady Barons. McEntee and McDonald were responsible for two goals each while Dawyot and Krolicki each scored one. Thiel got two back to cut the lead back down to 10, 16-6, but senior Anne Foster, Dawyot, and Krolicki closed out the game with a goal each to seal the 19-6.

Defensively, the Lady Barons had one of the best games in program history. Franciscan caused 22 turnovers, to set a program record for most caused turnovers in a game. Leading that attack was McEntee with five while senior Catherine Cahill had four and Krolicki and sophomore Elizabeth Jordan had three each.

McEntee and Krolicki was three draws each and McEntee led the Lady Barons with six ground balls.

Sophomore goalie Brittany Bain finished the day with six saves for her third win of the year.

Franciscan hits the road on Thursday as the Lady Barons head to Hiram for a 4pm contest.
