DELAWARE, Ohio – The Franciscan women's lacrosse team mounted a valiant comeback but couldn't top the Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops as the Lady Barons fell 13-10 on the road, Thursday evening.
Trailing 8-4 16 seconds into the second half, senior Mary Krolicki got fouled in the critical scoring area and set up a free position shot. Krolicki fired a rocket past the goalie and cut the deficit down to three, 8-5, with 28:59 to play in regulation. Almost three minutes later after three combined turnovers and a save by the Bishop goalie, Ohio Wesleyan completed a clear that ended with its ninth goal of the game. Krolicki won the next draw control for the Lady Barons and set up the Lady Baron offense. Senior Bridget Clune took a pass from junior Carly McDonald to score a goal right in front of the net and cut the deficit back to three, 9-6.
For just the second time in the game, Franciscan was able to score back-to-back goals as Krolicki followed up Clune's goal with her third of the game to trim the lead to 9-7 with 19:54 to play. The Lady Barons and Ohio Wesleyan traded free position goals to keep the lead at two before Paige Ross pushed the Battling Bishop lead back to three, 11-8, with 15:13 to play. Freshman Blair Wonderly helped keep the Lady Barons closes and she worked around the defense and split a pair of Bishops to score inside the far post with 13:08 to play for her eighth goal of the year. After another Ross goal gave OWU a 12-9 lead, Wonderly once again found her way through the Bishop defense for her ninth goal of the year with 7:57 to play.
Franciscan got off one shot in the next four minutes but it was blocked and Ohio Wesleyan once again found itself in its offensive zone. Sloane Baumartner drew a foul and was awarded a free position shot that she converted to give OWU a three-goal advantage once again with 3:12 to play.
Junior Elizabeth McEntee got the final shot of the game off with 1:40 to play, but despite their best efforts, the Lady Barons couldn't complete the comeback.
After trading goals in the first three minutes, the Battling Bishops went on a 5-0 run to take a 6-1 lead with 12:31 to play in the first. Krolicki halted the run with her first goal of the game off of a free position shot to cut the lead to 6-2. McDonald posted her 20th goal of the year two and a half minutes later to get the Lady Barons to within three, 6-3, with 5:30 to play.
