BUFFALO, NY – Freshman Sarah Cocozza was the difference maker as the Franciscan women's soccer team defeated Medaille 1-0 Saturday afternoon to win their regular-season finale.
The Lady Barons finish the regular season 8-8 and 6-3 in the AMCC while Medaille drops to 0-14 and 0-8 in the league. Franciscan has already secured a spot in the 2017 AMCC tournament and will now wait for the rest of the league games to be played to determine their seeding in the tournament.
Franciscan came out of the gate hot and took nine shots on the Medaille back line and forced the Maverick goalie to make five saves in the first 15 minutes of action. Following another slew of shots in the next 15 minutes, Cocozza finally broke the 0-0 tie with her second goal of the season off a pass from senior Megan Luiso.
Franciscan closed out the half with two more shots and two corner kicks but settled for the 1-0 advantage at the break.
The Lady Barons took the first seven shots of the second before Medaille got off a shot with less than four minutes left in regulation. That first shot of the half kicked off a three-shot run for the Mavericks before Luiso took the final shot of the game but was turned away by the Maverick goalie.
Luiso led the Lady Barons with seven shots while FUS out-shot Medaille 30-7 for the game.
Freshman Marita Ostrich got the start in the net for Franciscan and needed just one save to secure her second win of the year.
Franciscan will await the conclusion of the AMCC schedule on Tuesday to learn the Lady Barons final seed in the 2017 AMCC tournament.
