STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 match to Westminster (Pa.) in non-conference action. Wednesday afternoon.
Under overcast skies, the Lady Barons (1-3) and Titans (4-1) were scoreless for the 39 minutes of action until Jocelyn Gillette broke the tie. Gillette took a long pass across the box from Emily Irvine and placed it just out of the reach of senior keeper Sarah Luebking in the top corner of the net for the 1-0 lead with 4:51 left before half. The Lady Baron backline was able to keep the Titans from getting off any more shots in the first to go into halftime trailing 1-0.
Coming out of the break, the Titans got a shot off just 42 seconds into action by Luebking made a great save to keep the game close.
The Lady Barons had a chance to tie it six minutes into the half, by senior Elizabeth Dawyot's penalty shot just barely hit the post and came back into the field of play. Dawyot was able to collect the rebound and get another shot off but it went just wide and the game remained 1-0 in favor of Westminster.
Franciscan's defense was able to keep the Titans off balance for the rest of the contest and clear out two corner kicks without letting Westminster get a shot off to keep the Titans off of the board in the second half. The Lady Baron offense struggled to create scoring chances and was unable to find their equalizer.
Westminster outshot the Lady Batons 13-9, with nine of their shots coming in the first half.
Luebking finished the day with nine saves while her Titan counterpart needed three for the win.
Franciscan returns to action on Saturday when the Lady Barons host Geneva for a 1:00 pm non-conference contest.
