PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Franciscan women's soccer team did not let a last-minute location change halt their conference momentum as the Lady Barons posted their third 3-0 shut out of an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent with a 3-0 win over La Roche, Wednesday afternoon.
Due to an extremely wet grass field in Steubenville, the AMCC contest was moved to the campus of La Roche College but the Lady Barons did not slow down. Franciscan got the scoring going early and never looked back.
Senior captain Emily Wieszczek (Scotch Plain, NJ/Mother Seton Regional) got the Lady Barons on the board just 1:06 into action as she got a helper from classmate Elizabeth Dawyot (Landenberg, PA/Kennett) and found the back of the net for what would amount to be the game-winning goal.
Despite eight more shots in the half, the Lady Barons settled on the 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Redhawks held a 3-1 shot advantage in the first eight minutes of the second half, but a key save by senior keeper Sarah Luebking (Littleton, CO/Columbine) kept La Roche off the board and the Lady Barons went back on the attack. Junior Katie Kilian gave Franciscan a 2-0 lead in the 55th minute, this time sophomore Sarah Cocozza (Ellicott City, MD/Howard) added the helper. Both teams continued to test the other goalie but it would Franciscan that found an opening as sophomore Kaitrin O'Leary (Sidney, OH/Lehman) added the final tally off another assist from Dawyot in the 88th minute to seal the Lady Barons 3-0 victory.
Luebking finished the day with four saves in the win for the Lady Barons. The Redhawks held a slight 16-14 advantage in shots over the Lady Barons and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
Franciscan returns to action on Saturday as the Lady Barons host Penn St.-Behrend in a battle of the AMCC unbeaten teams at 1:00 pm.
