STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan women's soccer team dropped a tough 2-1 decision to visiting Mount Aloysius in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action, Wednesday afternoon.
The Lady Barons jumped out to a lead late in the first half as sophomore Gracie Tillman (Lost Creek, WV/Home School) took the throw-in from junior Kelsey Scott-Avery (Batavia, NY/Home School) and blasted the ball into the top far corner to give Franciscan the 1-0 lead.
Franciscan would hold the lead for the rest of the half, though Tillman got a final shot off before the hob but was turned away by the Mountie keeper.
The lead would be short-lived in the second half, however, as Summer Schell tied the game at 1-1- just 1:31 into action. The Mounties drew a foul just outside the box and set up a direct kick. Schell took the kick and curved it over senior keeper Sarah Luebking's (Littleton, CO/Columbine) hands for her third goal of the year.
The Franciscan offense was kept off-kilter for most of the second half as the Lady Barons did not get another shot off in the final 45 minutes. Mt. Aloysius broke the tie with just over five minutes to play as Kourtney Wall scored in traffic thanks to a one-timer from Sam Torrenti. The 2-1 lead would hold until the final horn.
The Mounties outshot the Lady Barons 10-4 and held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks. Luebking finished the day with five saves in net for the Lady Barons.
Franciscan gets back on the field on Saturday as the Lady Barons host D'Youville in a 1:00 pm AMCC contest. Prior to the game, Franciscan will honor its three graduating seniors, Sarah Luebking, Elizabeth Dawyot, and Emily Wieszczek.
