Records Fall in Final Day of AMCC Championship

ERIE, Pa. – Freshman Katie Cunningham and junior Elizabeth McNulty set an individual school record while the 400-yard freestyle relay team wrapped up the 2017 AMCC championship meet with a record-setting performance in the final day of the championship meet.

McNulty swam away with the gold in the 200-yard butterfly towards the end of the meet to pick up her second gold medal in as many days. After the first 50-yards, McNulty built herself a four-second lead as she swam a 29.07 heading into the second leg. The junior continued to build on her lead and needed a comfortable 37.88 in the final 50-yards to win the race with a time of 2:17.19. McNulty beat last year's championship time but just over 20 seconds and finished 14 seconds ahead of her next opponent.

Two events prior to McNulty's win, Cunningham set a school record of her own in the 200-yard breaststroke. After qualifying for the finals with a time of 2:48.62, the freshman swam an impressive 2:46.26 in the finals for a fourth-place finish. Cunningham shaved almost a full second off of the previous record, set at the AMCC meet in 2014.

In the final event of the meet, the Lady Barons picked up their third school record of the day in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Freshman Cristina Aramayo got the Lady Barons off to a solid start with a time of 1:00.73 in the first 100 yards. Rachel Solomon pulled the Lady Barons from sixth to fifth with a 57.68 split in her 100 yards and Maris Bey kept that pace with a 59.14 split in her 100-yards. McNulty pulled the Lady Barons into fourth with an impressive 57.77 anchor leg to bring up the fourth-place finish with a time of 3:55.50. The time cut .21 off of Franciscan's old school record.

Emily Allsteadt picked up the first points for the Lady Barons in the final day of the championship meet as she took ninth in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 21:42.05. Abby Commarford added three points for Franciscan with a 10th place time of 23:19.05 in the long race.

In the 200-yard backstroke "B" finals, Victoria Marshall took fourth and 10th overall with a time of 2:31.10.

Three Lady Barons took the top spots in the "B" final of the 100-yard freestyle as Aramayo was the first to touch the wall at 59.98. Bey was close behind with a time of 59.04 while Solomon took third in the heat with a time of 59.71.
