NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Franciscan women's tennis team opened the 2018 campaign with a statement win over Westminster (Pa.). For the first time in program history, the Lady Barons walked off of the court with a win over the Titans as FUS defeated Westminster, 6-3.
The two teams had met seven times prior to this afternoon with the last meeting in 2016.
Franciscan got off to a great start this afternoon as the Lady Barons swept doubles play. Senior Maria Binette and junior Madelyn Conrad picked up where they left off last fall with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles. Junior Grace Hammel found herself at No. 2 doubles with a new partner, sophomore Anna Victoria Haddad Garcia, but the two found a great rhythm early as they easily took their doubles match, 8-1. Seniors Julia Razook and Taranee Karimpour are familiar partners at No. 3 and the chemistry shined through as the two took their match, 8-3, to give Franciscan a 3-0 lead going into singles.
Haddad picked up her first singles win in a Lady Baron uniform as she swept her No. 3 singles match, 6-2, 6-3. Razook also picked up a win at singles as she won at No. 4, 6-0, 6-2.
There was no residual rust to shake off for Hammel as she returned from studying abroad last semester and swept her No. 5 singles match, 6-0, 6-0, to help clinch the victory for the Lady Barons.
Franciscan opens Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action tomorrow as the Lady Barons look to defend their conference crown with a match against La Roche on their home courts at 11:00 am at Belleview Park.
