Lady Barons Earn First Win of the Season

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – After dropping the first set 27-25, the Franciscan volleyball team rallied for three-straight set wins to earn their first victory of the season, 3-1, over Waynesburg, Wednesday evening.

Senior Maria Ciola highlighted the Lady Barons win with 16 kills as she hit .364 for the match, her highest hitting percentage of the season. Ciola added a service ace and four digs for the day. Sophomore Lauren Betar led Franciscan with 18 digs while freshman Emily Nutter handed out 14 assists and had seven digs.

Trailing 24-21 in the first set the Lady Barons rattled off four-straight points to take a 25-24 lead but Waynesburg got a sideout and finished off the set with two-straight points to win 27-25.
Franciscan carried the momentum from the end of the first set into the second as the Lady Barons turned a 15-10 deficit into a 20-19 lead. After Waynesburg tied the set at 22-22, Ciola and freshman Maria Bosco sandwiched a pair of kills around a Nutter service ace to win the set, 25-22.

The two evenly matched teams battled back and forth in the third set until Franciscan took a 16-12 lead thanks to a Waynesburg attack error. The Yellow Jackets battled back but could not get closer than 23-16 before Franciscan earned its first set point. After Franciscan posted its first set point, the Yellow Jackets scored seven-straight points to trail by one, 24-23. The Lady Barons got the benefit of a bad serve by Waynesburg to win the third set 25-23 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

After Waynesburg took a 2-1 lead in the fourth set, Franciscan scored five-straight points to take the lead 6-2 and did not surrender the lead for the rest of the set. The Lady Barons led by as many as nine, 17-8, as they had full control of the final set. Waynesburg trimmed the lead to 24-17, but a Waynesburg attack error gave the Lady Barons the set win, 25-17, and the match.

Franciscan improved to 1-8 on the year while Waynesburg fell to 1-9.

The Lady Barons are back in action on Friday on the first day of the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic hosted by Wooster. Franciscan and Adrian square off in the first match at 5:30 pm followed by Marietta at 7:30 pm.
