Franciscan Drops Final Two Matches at Wooster

WOOSTER – The Franciscan volleyball team dropped its final two matches of the 2018 Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic Saturday afternoon as the Lady Barons fell to Dennison and Oberlin, 3-0.

The Lady Barons fell to Dennison by scores of 25-14, 25-18, 26-24 before dropping their match against Oberlin, 25-20, 25-15, 25-11.

Senior Maria Ciola led the Lady Barons with 25 kills on the day, including a 15-for-32 day against Dennison to go with her 10 digs for her first double-double of the season. Ciola was named to the All-Tournament team following the matches.

In their opening match of the day, the Lady Barons struggled to get their offense going in the first two sets before coming back in the third. Franciscan took the lead right out of the gate in the final set before Dennison opened up a 7-5 lead. The Lady Barons battled back and tied the game at 7-7 and against at 8-8. Dennison eventually pushed its lead to 17-14 but Franciscan did not back down and tied the set at 22-22 thanks to a kill from freshman Becky Murgia. After trading side outs, Ciola nailed back-to-back kills to give Franciscan a 24-23 lead and their first set point. Dennison came back and scored three-straight points to take the set and the match 26-24.

In their final set of the weekend, Franciscan came out strong in the first set against Oberlin but struggled to keep up their momentum.

The Lady Barons raced out in front with a 6-2 lead thanks to strong serving from Murgia and a block from Caitlin O'Malley and Ciola. Oberlin called a timeout and used an 8-1 run to take the lead 10-7. Franciscan battled back and re-took the lead 12-11 thanks to an Oberlin service error.

Oberlin was able to maintain its lead for the rest of the set as the Yeowomen kept the Lady Barons at bay and won the opening set, 25-20.

Oberlin took the lead early in the second set, 4-2, and did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the match and won the final two sets 25-15, 25-11.

Franciscan returns to the court on Tuesday as the Lady Barons travel to Carnegie Mellon for a 7:00 pm non-conference match.
