Lady Barons Send Seniors off with Win

STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan volleyball team sent their two seniors, Maria Ciola and Theresa Moore, off with a 3-0 win in the final match of the season against Hilbert, Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Barons defeated Hilbert in the final match of the season for both teams by set scores of 25-19, 25-14, 25-18.

After the Hawks took a 15-13 lead midway through the first set, the Lady Barons took control and rattled off six-straight points to take a 19-15 lead, highlighted by three kills from Ciola. Hilbert briefly halted the Lady Baron offense but a Hawk service error gave the serve back to Franciscan. The Lady Barons took advantage of two straight attack errors from Hilbert to take a 22-16 lead. After Hilbert got two points back, Franciscan closed out the set on a 3-1 run, bookended by a service ace and kill from Ciola. Franciscan used a 25-19 win to take the 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set began just as the first set did, a tightly contested back and forth contest until Franciscan took a 15-11 lead thanks to kills from Caitlin O'Malley, Emma Birong, and Ciola. After Hilbert used a 3-1 run to cut the lead to 16-14, Franciscan scored the set's final nine points to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-14 win.

The final set was much closer than the first two as neither team could pull away as the set was tied 17-17 after neither team scored more than three points in a row. Franciscan broke the tie thanks to a Hawk service error and a service ace from Lauren Betar. After Hilbert got one point back at 19-18, the Lady Barons scored the match's final six points to win 25-18 and close out the final match of the year, 3-0.

Ciola led the Lady Barons with another impressive offensive performance as she finished the day with 23 kills and hit .390 for the match. Ciola posted a double-double as she added 15 digs. Betar finished the day with 15 digs as well. Moore closed out her career with a kill, two assists, a service ace, and eight digs for the Lady Barons.

Following the match, the Lady Barons celebrated Ciola and Moore, bot of whom are four-year members of the Franciscan volleyball team. Moore finished her career as a Lady Baron with 176 digs, 176 assists, and 41 service aces. Ciola posted 279 kills this year, a personal season best for the outside hitter, and finished her career with 988 total kills to rank third all-time at Franciscan. Ciola amassed 805 digs to finished seventh all-time. The Burk, VA native also posted 121 assists, 44 service aces, and 109 total blocks.

The Lady Barons end the 2018 season with a 4-21 overall record and a 2-7 slate in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.
