Men's Soccer Wins Season Finale 4-2
STEUBENVILLE, OH - Franciscan University of Steubenville men's
soccer team closed out its season with a 4-2 victory over the
University of Pitt-Bradford at home on Saturday to end the season
with a winning record of 9-8-1. It was the final game for Senior
Barons William Herrmann, Timothy Sutter, Kyle Langan, Ryan Keogler,
Erik Hickson, Gary Klump, and co-captains Mike Re and Jamie
Cleaton.
The Barons struck first in the opening half when Keogler scored
his fifth goal of the season on a cross-pass from sophomore Steve
Duran to make the score 1-0 in the third minute. The home team
would then make it 2-0 when freshman Thomas Allen scored on another
Duran pass in the twenty-fifth minute.
The Panthers would get on the board in the nineteenth minute
when Toby Abdul-Razag scored on a penalty shot to close the gap,
2-1. The Barons would get a goal of their own on a penalty kick
less than a minute later by Duran to make it 3-1.
The second half was an even battle between both teams until the
Panthers' Nick Benedetto scored with fifteen minutes left to make
the score 3-2. The Barons' were able to close it out as junior
Christian Bobak scored an insurance goal off of a Keogler pass to
finalize the game at 4-2.
Head coach Antonio Soave was very proud of his team in his
first-year at the helm for Franciscan University. "We have come a
long way," he said. "Our hard work has paid off. The guys did a
really great job today. I'm really proud of them. It's a great way
to end the season." The Barons completed their first year in the
Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, finishing sixth in the
conference with a record of 4-5. Franciscan University of
Steubenville, who is in a provisional stage, will be eligible for
conference tournament play in 2011.
