FUS Men's Soccer Falls to Geneva College, 3-0

STEUBENVILLE, OH. - The Franciscan University of Steubenville men's soccer team lost its first home game of the season on September 17th to the Golden Tornadoes of Geneva College, 3-0. The Barons now fall to a 4-3-1, 1-0 record on the season.

The first half started off slow for both teams until Geneva's Bruce Fox scored at the midway point of the first half to breathe life into the visiting team. The Barons were able to find some offensive opportunities but were unable to capitalize on them and went into halftime down 1-0. The two teams battled back and forth very aggressively for the first twenty minutes of the second half. Fox again found the back of the net in the 23rd minute on a free kick. Less than two minutes later, Zac Buffalini scored again for Geneva to finalize the score at 3-0. Geneva College improves to 6-1.

FUS goalkeeper William Herrmann, a graduate of Catholic Central and a native of Wintersville, had three saves in goal. Herrmann was once again named Alleghany Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) goalkeeper of the week for his solid play last week. The Barons out shot Geneva College, 11-9, and each team received fouls including two yellow cards. Coach Soave was "disheartened" by his team's play. "We failed to put for the effort that was needed to win. We didn't challenge in the air, we had no anticipation, and we didn't close the gap in the midfield. We made no variety of runs. It was disheartening. Technically and tactically we were the better team. We were slow today. They wanted it more than us. We are superior then this." Complimented for outstanding play were players James Cleaton, Andrew Straub, and Tom Allen, whom coached described as "valiant."

The Barons saw play from Kyle Langan, who had been injured, and they will look forward to the return of more injured players soon. Franciscan University hits the road in their return to AMCC play on Saturday as they prepare to face Medaille College on September 20th at 8pm.
