Box Score FUS Men's Soccer Overpowers Waynesburg, 3-0
Steubenville, OH. - The Franciscan University of Steubenville
men's soccer team played their home opener on Wednesday afternoon.
The host Barons beat the Yellow Jackets of Waynesburg, 3-0.
Led by the sensational play of Sophomore forward Steve Duran,
the Barons came out very aggressive in the first half, which set
the tone for the remainder of the game. After taking a hard foul
near the box, Duran set up a nice pass for striker Gary Klump, a
senior from Canton, MI, who promptly scored his first goal of the
season at the 37:11 minute mark.
FUS carried that momentum in to the 2nd half, when junior
captain Christian Boback from Buffalo, NY scored his first goal of
the season on a corner kick at the 9:15 minute mark. Eddie Recznik,
from Bergolz, OH, put the icing on the cake, scoring his first goal
with 13:12 left to play.
The Barons outshot the Yellow Jackets, 14-3. Duran led the team
with five, followed by Boback and Marc Johnson with two each.
Waynesburg, who falls to 1-2 on the season, was led by Cory Smith,
who had two shots on goal, and goalkeeper Tyler Hellwig, who made
five saves.
First year head coach Antonio Soave was pleased with his team's
performance. "I thought we established the pace early on, and that
was imperative. We came out strong and played our game. We attacked
substantially and significantly through the first thirty minutes,
which set the pace. We played our game today. I thought we had some
standout performances from Steve [Duran], Matt Taylor, Zeph
[Swope], and Jamie [Cleaton]."
FUS (2-1, 0-0) hits the road again for the Bethany College
Tournament on Saturday the 10th and Sunday the 11th. They will face
host Bethany and then Carnegie Mellon University.
