Baron's Men's Soccer Ties Bethany College 1-1 in 2OT

BETHANY, WV. - Franciscan University of Steubenville men's soccer team played in the first round of the "Fuzzy" Williams Memorial Classic hosted by Bethany College. After a hard fought game, the team tied the host school, 1-1, in double overtime.

Zeph Swope, a Junior from Columbus, OH, scored his second goal of the season four minutes into the game to give the Barons an early 1-0 lead. Despite Swope's goal being the only shot attempt they had  in the first half, FUS held on to the lead going into halftime. FUS was unable to keep the lead, though, as freshman Cameron Ward scored for Bethany at the 19 minute mark in the second half. He was assisted by Mike Aivalies.

The two teams continued to battle throughout the rest of the game and into two overtimes, but neither was able to capitalize. Franciscan goalkeeper William Herrmann, a senior from Wintersville and an alumnus of Catholic Central High School in Steubenville, had seven saves in goal for the Barons. Steve Duran, a Sophomore from Chantilly, VA, led all players with six shots on goal. Junior captain Christian Boback was second for the Barons with two.

FUS settles their record at 2-1-1, 0-0 on the season. The Barons, who are in their first official year in the Alleghany Mountain Collegiate Conference, will play Carnegie Mellon University in the second game of the tournament. Then FUS will return home to play Grove City College on Wednesday September 10 at 5 p.m. on the Franciscan University of Steubenville campus.
