Box Score Franciscan Men's Soccer Drops Game to Carnegie Mellon,
4-1
BETHANY, WV - The Franciscan University of Steubenville men's
soccer team lost to the Tartans of Carnegie Mellon University on
Sunday in the second game of the "Fuzzy" Williams Memorial Classic
hosted by Bethany College. The Barons, who had just come off of a
double overtime tie to Bethany the night before, now fall to 2-2-1
(0-0) on the season.
Carnegie Mellon jumped out to the early lead as Ricky Griffin, a
Junior, scored five minutes into the game. Griffin would strike
again in the 12th minute, giving CMU a 2-0 lead going into the
half. Franciscan would comeback when junior captain Christian Bobak
(Buffalo, NY) scored his second goal in three games off an assist
by sophomore Steve Duran (Chantilly, VA) to close the gap at 2-1 in
the 58th minute. Eighteen seconds later, Griffin would score his
hat-trick goal to make the lead 3-1.
Griffin would finish off his dominant performance by registering
his fourth goal of the game at the 73:15 mark. Goalkeeper William
Herrmann, who is a native of Wintersville and is an alumnus of
Catholic Central High School, would make 12 saves on the day for
the Barons.
FUS was out shot by the Tartans, 26-8. Senior Jamie Cleaton led
the Barons with 3 shots on goal, followed by Duran and Bobak, with
two apiece. Franciscan University will welcome a home stand that
begins on September 10 against Grove City College at 5pm.
On Saturday the 13th the Barons will start conference play as
the newest member of the Alleghany Mountain Collegiate Conference
(AMCC) against Hillbert College at 4 p.m. on the Franciscan
University of Steubenville campus.
