Lady Barons Overwhelmed 89-41 by Penn St. Behrend
Franciscan women's basketball team suffered a devastating 89-41
loss to conference rival Penn State-Behrend on Tuesday night,
dashing hopes to get in a win before the Thanksgiving break. The
loss drops the barons to 0-4 (0-1) on the season. Though Franciscan
shot a respectable 35.4% from the floor, the Lady Lions of Behrend
tallied a 47.5 shooting percentage and distributed the ball evenly
around the court giving them a solid win on the road.
Junior Marin Weber led the Lady Barons with 10 points and 9
boards. Fellow Junior Sarah Viancourt contributed 9 points and
grabbed a pair of rebounds. Behrend held last year's overall
leading scorer Cara Mitchell to 7 point for the game. Sophomores
Jordan Henneberry, Jen Winkle, and Junior Caitlin Donovan, all
registered an even 4 points for the night.
For the Lady Lions, Freshmen Holly Bourquin shot 9 for 11 on the
evening and finished with 18 points. Junior Kelly Nowacinski helped
her team with 14 points and a pair of rebounds. Other double digits
scorers were Katie White and Lotis Taylor with 11 and 10 points
respectively.
Playing a much closer game late last season with a 57-41 loss to
Behrend, Lady Barons coach Kelly Herrmann is optimistic about the
rematch on January 18, 2010. "I told the girls that we need to take
better control of the ball. We worked hard during the game, but the
control was off. This season, we have players who can really
compete, and we hope to prove that at our second game (vs.
Behrend)." Since Franciscan joined the Allegheny Mountain
Collegiate Conference last year, Behrend leads the series with
Franciscan, 3-0.
The Lady Barons return to their home court on December 2,
hosting Penn State-Altoona. Tipoff is set for 6pm.
