Barons Upset Mt. Aloysius

Box Score

STEUBENVILLE, OH - The Franciscan University of Steubenville men's basketball team upset the Mounties of Mount Aloysius 65-63 on Wednesday. The Barons found their first win in the Alleghany Mountain Collegiate conference bring that record to 1-14 and 4-18 overall snapping a 14-game losing streak.

In the fist half the battle was back and forth, with neither team getting much of a lead over the other. Senior captain Rob Slattery, who had 30 points in the last meeting between these two teams, had 10 points in a strong first half. The Mounties took a slim 32-31 lead going into the locker room.

The Mounties were only able to take a seven point lead about half way through the second. FUS did not take the lead until the final minute when junior Josh Ducoulombier made two free throws making the score 62-61. Mounties Ben Murray made a layup with 26 seconds left to give them lead. Ducoulombier missed a quick three on the other end and junior Pete Burak grabbed the rebound to give the Barons coaching staff time to call a final timeout with 7 seconds remaining.

Head coach Sean Donovan drew up a play calling for Ducoulombier to make the shot. Sam Titus dished a pass to Ducoulombier with two defenders in his face faded away shooting a Hail Mary three-pointer at the buzzer and his prayer was answered as the shot banked in and the students of FUS stormed the court.

Slattery had a huge night, scoring 22 points and 10 boards for his sixth double-double of the season. Ducoulombier had 10 points, none bigger than the final three. Mike Feuz, Titus and Burak rounded out the top scorers with 8 and 7 and 5 points respectively.

A very happy Coach Donovan spoke after the game, "It speaks volumes of these guys and how they have never given up. We have worked hard all season, and this win is a testament to how hard they have worked. Our defense was outstanding tonight. If you look at the stats, they don't match up. They shot almost 42 percent and we shot around 37 percent. Where we got them was with the turnovers (21-6). We drew up some plays at the right times and I'm really proud of these guys."

The Barons will look to keep the fire burning as they play their final home game of the season on Saturday against Penn State Behrend. It will be senior night for Robert Slattery and Curtis Allen, both captains for the Barons. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at the Finnegan Fieldhouse.
