Franciscan Loses Second Straight Double-Header to Rio
Grande
The Barons of Franciscan faced-off for the second straight set
of games against the Red Storm of Rio Grande. FUS was completely
dominated in both games, losing 20-0 and 11-1 to fall to 0-4 on the
season.
Franciscan ate up five pitchers from their staff in the first
contest. Kevin Marrow (0-1) took the mound for five innings, giving
up 3 earned runs off 6 hits. Two errors in the first and fifth
innings set the score 6-0 going into the bottom of the sixth.
Dustin Pagano replaced Marrow on the mound. Pagano walked four
consecutive batters without an out before being pulled for Sam
Quillen, who pitched one inning of relief the day before. Quillen
struck out Rio Grande's Dominick McAllister before giving up a
single that drove in two runs, charged to Pagano. Quillen then gave
up a double to Ryan Yakura which moved the runner to third and
scored another. Chris Kotur replaced Quillen, giving up a walk and
a hit along with a balk to allow two more runs. Kotur was pulled
for Jared Kimutis. Kimutis gave up six more earned runs off four
hits before the inning was finally over.
Offensively, Franciscan also struggled. Center fielder Will
Peyton went 2-3 and Robert Penate went 1-3 as Rio Grande's Desmond
Sullivan held the Barons to three hits.
The second game revealed more struggles for the Barons. Peyton
took the mound for FUS. Peyton (0-1) gave up 3 earned runs in four
innings of work, while Robert Marrow gave up 3 more in relief. The
Barons' defense struggled, with three errors allowing 3 runs to
score. Franciscan's lone run came in the second with Chris Clynes
scoring off a wild-pitch.
Franciscan will look to get back on track as they head to Coco
Beach, Fla. for spring training on March 15.
