Lady Barons Dominate in Home Opener
STEUBENVILLE, OH - The Lady Barons of Franciscan
University of Steubenville took on Penn State-Beaver in their
season opener at home on Tuesday night, emerging victorious in a
three-game sweep, 25-8, 25-16, 25-14. With the win, the Lady
Barons improved to 1-0 on the season.
The Lady Barons showed utter dominance in the first game,
refusing to allow Penn State to gain any sort of advantage and
taking a 25-8 win. This dominance continued into the next two
games, and the Lady Barons were able to sub in nearly their entire
roster, who kept them ahead for wins of 25-16 and 25-14.
Meghann Maccoun, a returning player who missed last season
due to spending a semester in Austria, led the Lady Barons
offensively with 11 kills on 18 attack attempts. Ali
Aeschliman of Steubenville, OH, contributed 5 kills on 10 attempts,
as well as 7 service aces. Senior setter Teresa Marcotte also
posted impressive numbers, recording 15 assists on the night, while
newcomer Alex Stanley added 6. Nicole Henson was the
defensive standout for the Lady Barons, accumulating 10 digs.
"Our philosophy is to do few things, but to do them well,
and that's exactly what we did tonight," Lady Barons coach Kelly
Herrmann remarked in a post-game interview. "We've been
working on hitting hard, making good decisions, and covering our
hitters. Tonight was a really good first step in that
direction. For a first match, we really did well with all of
those things. Our match against Bethany tomorrow night will
be tougher, but we're up to the challenge."
The Lady Barons (1-0, 0-0) will take on Bethany College at
home on Wednesday, September 2, at 7 p.m.
