Lady Barons Lose Close Contest to Bethany
STEUBENVILLE, OH - The Lady Barons of Franciscan University of
Steubenville hosted Bethany College in their second match of the
season on Wednesday night, losing 18-25, 25-21, 15-25, 21-25.
With the loss, the Lady Barons fell to 1-1 (0-0) on the season.
Meghann Maccoun was the offensive standout for the Lady Barons
on the night, recording 10 kills. Teammate Anna Cain
contributed 9 kills, while Meg Kay had 5. Captains Paddy
Scott and Teresa Marcotte carried the team in assists on the night,
registering 12 and 11, respectively. Libero Nicole Henson was
once again the team's defensive leader, registering 15 digs on the
night. Paddy Scott had chipped in defensively with 8 digs,
while Teresa Marcotte had 8. The team also suffered an injury
to star middle hitter Ali Aeschliman, who was sidelined early in
the first game and did not return.
"We can play a lot better than this," Lady Barons coach Kelly
Herrmann remarked in a post-game interview. "We had too many
errors, and, at times, we played a little too frantically instead
of confidently, and that comes with not having played together
enough. We need to get to a point where we can maintain our
composure and not become frantic. We have to believe that
we're good enough. We saw signs of that in our match
tonight. Ali's injury will be challenging to us, but we have
enough depth to cope with it. On the whole, we need to have
less errors, more consistency. If we trust each other on the
court, and I know that we will win."
The Lady Barons' next contest is a tournament at La Roche
College. The Lady Barons will face Penn State-Beaver at 3:30
p.m., and then will take on Bethany College at 8 p.m.
