Cara Mitchell Stays Strong Despite Loss

STEUBENVILLE, OH – The Lady Barons basketball team of Franciscan University of Steubenville hosted La Roche on Wednesday night, losing 64-34. With the loss, the Lady Barons fall 0-12 (0-9) in the season.

The Lady Barons came out strong at the start of the game, taking a 12-2 lead midway through the first half. However, La Roche quickly closed the gap and took a 31-19 advantage as they headed into the locker room.

Cara Mitchell continued her outstanding play for the Lady Barons in the game. She played 37 minutes, and tallied 17 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 block. Kristin Belleque also had a solid performance with 5 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 steals. Freshman guard Jessi Darmelio contributed 6 points.

“We had them down early, but then we just started standing around on offense,” Lady Barons coach Kelly Herrmann remarked. “When they got up by a lot, we didn't stop trying, though - we played hard until the final minutes. La Roche is suffering from injuries just as we are, and they only played with 6 tonight. It was tough for us without Jess [Belleque], and she may be injured for the season. However, we have some games down the road that are very winnable, and we're looking forward to getting our first win.”

The Lady Barons are now 0-3 against La Roche since entering the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. However, they will rematch them on the road on February 17.

The Lady Barons' next contest is January 18 at Penn State-Behrend at 6 p.m.
