BEHREND, PA - The Barons basketball team of Franciscan
University of Steubenville upset Penn State-Behrend on the road on
Monday night, stealing a 67-64 victory. With the win, the Barons
improved to 3-11 (2-8).
The Barons fell behind early, 8-0, and didn't register their
first points until seven minutes into the first half. Penn
State-Behrend dominated the offensive glass, and accumulated 16
points on 9 offensive rebounds in the first half, enabling them to
take a 29-19 advantage going into the locker room.
The Barons came out firing in the second half. 3-pointers by
Connor Flanagan and Mike Feuz put them within 5 points early in the
half, and it became a back-and-forth match from that point on.
Senior guard Josh Ducoulombier hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 0:14
left on the clock and two free throws by Mike Feuz with five
seconds left sealed the game.
Matt Liedel led the Barons with 16 points, while Thomas
Klienschnitz had 12 and Ducoulombier and Feuz had 11 apiece. Adam
Potter was Behrend's offensive standout with 24 points, and
Nick Colella added 15.
The Barons are now 1-3 against Penn State-Behrend since entering
the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference last season. The game
marked Penn State-Behrend's first home loss of the year.
“It was an amazing team effort today,” Barons coach
Sean Donovan remarked post-game. “Everyone did their part.
Pete Burak was out with an ankle injury, so Mike Feuz started for
us tonight and played more minutes than anyone else. He rose to the
challenge and was a leader on both ends of the court. He made two
crucial free throws for us down the stretch, and he shut down their
top scorer on defense. Matt Liedel led us in scoring, and Josh Duke
hit some big shots for us at various points in the game, but it was
really a team effort that got us this huge victory today.”
The Barons' next contest is at Penn State-Altoona this
Wednesday at 8 p.m.
