Battered Barons Struggle & Fall to Altoona

Box Score

ALTOONA, PA – Despite injuries sustained earlier in the week, Franciscan University's Baron Soccer team tried to regain momentum to clinch a win Tuesday night. Facing top-ranked Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Penn State Altoona, the Barons were shutout 5-0. Franciscan now stands 1-10-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the AMCC.

"Altoona played very well," said Johann Marin, head coach for the Barons. "They are young but organized. They played well in the [cold weather] conditions and moved the ball beautifully. We were unable to adjust. We weren't quick enough or aggressive enough. We will be working on getting better."

It was a struggle for the Barons, who were outshot 25-1 on the night. Senior captain Pat Mahon had the only shot on goal for the Barons in the first half. The Lions scored three times in the first half and twice in the second. David Almeida played the first 60 minutes of the game with seven saves and conceding four goals before Kevin McCartney took his place and gave up one goal in his 20 minutes in the goal.

The Barons will look to refresh with a non-conference game on Thursday, October 14, against Penn State Beaver. Game time is set for 4 p.m. on the campus of Franciscan University of Steubenville.
