Barons and Hawks Tie in Double Overtime

Box Score

HAMBURG, N.Y. – In a thrilling game against Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Hilbert College, Franciscan University's men's soccer team took the battle into double overtime. With top players suffering from injuries, the Barons found help with some freshmen teammates to help bring the Barons to a 2-2 draw.

Franciscan struck first when Leonel Lacoyo took a break away all the way to the net to score his team-leading fourth goal of the season and give the Barons a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute. With three minutes left in the first half, Franciscan committed a costly foul inside the box, setting Hilbert up for a penalty kick and a goal, tying the score 1-1.

The Barons scored again in the second half when freshman Luke Merry scored his first goal of the year, putting Franciscan ahead 2-1. A final minute goal by Hilbert sent the game into overtime 2-2.

Both overtime periods provided Franciscan and Hilbert with scoring opportunities, but neither team was able to capitalize.

Franciscan now stand 1-7-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the AMCC. The Barons will look for a second conference win on Wednesday, October 6, as they welcome La Roche College to Steubenville.Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
