Box Score GREENSBURG, Pa.—The Franciscan University men's
soccer team traveled to the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg
for a Tuesday afternoon match, and despite cold, rainy weather the
Barons were able to come back from an early deficit to take the 5-2
victory.
Pitt-Greensburg got on the board first in the 14 minutes when
Justin Grubb fired a shot past Franciscan goalkeeper David Almeida
from point-blank range. Franciscan's Thomas Allen quickly
erased that deficit six minutes later when he found the back of the
net off of a Greensburg turnover. He didn't waste any time
giving the Barons the lead, as he notched his second goal of the
day four minutes later off of a free kick.
"Tommy Allen had an outstanding game," head coach
Johann Marin said.
Five minutes later into the match, Greensburg knotted the score
at two, a score that remained until halftime. The Barons came out
firing in the second half, however, getting goals from Steven
Duran, John Hermann, and Leonel Lacayo. They held Greensburg
scoreless in the second to walk away with a 5-2 victory.
"I did have a very young team," Marin added.
"When I looked on the field tonight there were really only
four returning players, and all of the guys did an outstanding job
coming together to play the soccer I was demanding of them. I want
to thank God for His blessings and mercy that He showed for us this
season."
The win gives the Barons a final record of 5-12-1 on the year
overall, and 4-4-1 in the conference.
"I am grateful the boys answered the call to competition
as they continued to grow individually and as a team," coach
Marin added. "That is all I could hope for as a coach. We
finished on a strong note; it was a continually improving season,
we did not go backwards."
