A Close Match despite the Score

Box Score

ALTOONA, Pa. – On Tuesday, the Lady Baron Tennis team of Franciscan University traveled to Penn State Altoona only to fall 8-1 on the day.  Despite the heavy defeat, the match was much more competitive among the singles and doubles play.

"It was a lot closer than what the match score said," Coach, Curtis Allen said.  "Our individual stats weren't that bad."

The best example of the competitive day came in Taylor McColgan's singles match against Leah Beilhart.  Beilhart won the first set 7-5.  Beilhart then won the second set but not before McColgan took her to 6-6, and six deuces before Beilhart finally outlasted her for the final point.

"It seemed that our problem was we started late," Allen said.  "We let them get out ahead early in the matches, and tried to rebound late.  We just we're able to dig ourselves out."

The only change in the close-but-no-victory trend came in freshman Amanda Boik's match. Boik lost the first set 4-6, but rebounded to win 6-1, to grab Franciscan's lone victory with a 10-7 tiebreaker finish.

The Lady Barons take no break in their conference play, hosting La Roche College tomorrow beginning at 4pm.
