PITTSBURGH, Pa.—The Franciscan Baron rugby team traveled
to Duquesne University Saturday to play their final match of the
season, clinching their third straight win. The Barons will be ride
the momentum of this 29-19 victory into post-season play as number
one seed in their Allegheny Rugby Union division.
The Barons were able to notch five tries from five different
players on the day. Getting in on the scoring action were John
Till, John
Manni, Matt
Strickland, Mike Storelli, and Mike Brasie. Edmund Mitchell
tacked on two, two-point conversions.
The Baron coaching staff was especially impressed with the play
from sophomore Strickland. "He is just a high intensity player,"
said assistant rugby coach Adam Becker. "He's a play-maker out
there."
Becker also commented on the physical conditioning that the
Barons put to good use in the match. "We came out with great
intensity right off the bat," Becker added. "It was a hot day and
the sun was beating down on us, but we didn't let that effect us
too much because our physical conditioning is top notch."
The win gives the Barons a final record of 3-0, and moves them
into the ARU semi-finals on Saturday, October 16. Being the top
seed in the division gives the Barons home field advantage –
the match will be played at Memorial Field on the campus of
Franciscan University of Steubenville.
